Using Bangsal harbour without preparation

Bangsal is notorious for aggressive touts who charge 10x the real price. Buy tickets ONLY from the official booth inside. Or skip it entirely — use Teluk Nare fast boats instead.

Underestimating distances

Lombok roads are slower than Bali. Senggigi to Kuta is 2–2.5 hrs, not 1. Senggigi to Senaru is 2 hrs. Always add 30–45 min buffer to Google Maps estimates.

Skipping south Lombok

Most tourists hit the Gilis and leave. South Lombok has the best beaches on the island — Tanjung Aan, Mawun and Selong Belanak rival anything in Southeast Asia.

Only visiting Gili Trawangan

Gili T is the party island. Gili Meno (romantic, underwater statues) and Gili Air (local feel, best food) are equally worth visiting and far less crowded.

ATMs are scarce outside Senggigi, Mataram and Kuta. Gili Islands have ATMs but they run out regularly. Withdraw enough cash before heading to remote areas.
