Hyderabad in 3 Days: Biryani, Forts & Bazaars (Budget to Premium, 2026)
3 complete plans with real timings, actual costs, a proper biryani trail — and the Old City secrets most tourists walk right past.
The biryani war between Paradise and Bawarchi has raged for decades. My verdict: Paradise for flavour, Shadab for authenticity, Bawarchi for value. You need to try all three.

📍 Old City vs New City
Hyderabad is two cities in one. This is the most important decision for your trip.
🕌Old City
⚠️ Traffic is intense. Walk or take autos within Old City. Don't drive here.
🏙️New City (Hi-Tech / Banjara Hills)
⚠️ Metro connects well to Old City. Best base for first-timers who want comfort.
Smart move: Stay in Banjara Hills or Begumpet (New City), day-trip to the Old City for Charminar, Laad Bazaar and biryani. Metro + auto gets you anywhere in 30 minutes.

Heritage Plan — Banjara Hills / Begumpet Base
Stay: Mid-range hotel · ₹2,000–₹4,000/night · Cab + Metro
- ●8:30am: Cab to Charminar (₹25 entry). Arrive before the crowds. Climb all four minarets for the Old City panorama.
- ●9:30am: Laad Bazaar for lac bangles — walk past the first 200m of machine-made stalls, the real artisans sit deeper inside. Budget ₹500–₹1,500 for authentic lac bangles.
- ●11am: Chowmahalla Palace (₹80). The Durbar Hall with its 19 Belgian crystal chandeliers is worth the entry alone. 1.5 hours.
- ●12:30pm: Lunch at Shadab. Mutton biryani + double ka meetha = ₹350–₹500.
- ●2pm: Salar Jung Museum (₹50). Don't miss the musical clock (every full hour) and the Veiled Rebecca marble sculpture. 2–2.5 hours.
- ●5pm: Mecca Masjid (free, non-prayer hours). One of the largest mosques in India. The bricks in the central arch were brought from Mecca.
- ●6:30pm: Golconda Fort Sound & Light Show (₹130). Book ahead — the 7pm English show fills up on weekends.
- ●Dinner: Hotel Nizam, Madina Road. The locals' biryani secret. ₹300–₹450.
- ●7:30am: Golconda Fort (₹25). Early morning = cool air, empty ramparts, best light for photos.
- ●Golconda at 5:30pm for the Sound & Light Show — the acoustics of the clap echoing from the gate to the top of the fort are genuinely engineering marvel stuff. But mornings are better for exploring the full complex.
- ●10:30am: Qutb Shahi Tombs (₹25) — 700m from Golconda, always empty. The tombs of the dynasty that built Hyderabad. 45 min.
- ●12pm: Cab to Banjara Hills. Lunch at Jewel of Nizam or Shah Ghouse for haleem (seasonal) or kebabs. ₹500–₹800.
- ●2pm: Birla Mandir (free). Hilltop views of Hussain Sagar and the twin cities.
- ●3:30pm: Boat ride to Buddha statue (₹75 return). The 18m monolithic statue took 700 workers 2 years.
- ●5pm: Tank Bund promenade walk — statues of 33 famous Telangana personalities line the road.
- ●Dinner: Paradise, Secunderabad (original branch). The gold standard. ₹400–₹600 for two.
- ●9am: Shilparamam craft village, Hitec City (₹50). Pochampally ikat, Bidriware, Nirmal paintings — buy direct from artisans.
- ●11am: Nehru Zoological Park (₹50) if travelling with family — one of India's largest. Or Sudha Cars Museum (₹50) for something quirky — cars shaped like cameras, cricket bats, stilettos.
- ●12:30pm: Lunch at Chutneys, Banjara Hills. Best South Indian tiffin in Hyderabad. Dosas from ₹150.
- ●2pm: Begum Bazaar for pearls. Hyderabad is the pearl capital of India — real freshwater pearls start at ₹200. Get a certificate of authenticity. Bargain to 40% of first quoted price.
- ●4pm: GVK One Mall for last-minute shopping or Karachi Bakery for the famous fruit biscuits (₹250–₹400/box). Perfect gift.
- ●Depart from RGIA (30–45 min from Banjara Hills, ₹600–₹900 by cab).

🍛 The Biryani Trail
You cannot visit Hyderabad and eat biryani only once. Here is the definitive ranking from someone who has eaten at all of them multiple times.
Paradise, Secunderabad (Original)
₹280–₹350/plateBest overall flavour
Go to the original Secunderabad branch, not the chain outlets. The chicken biryani here set the standard. Arrive before 1pm for lunch or 8pm for dinner.
Shadab, Near Charminar
₹250–₹350/plateMost authentic Hyderabadi
The mutton biryani with mirchi ka salan is the real Old City experience. The setting opposite Madina Hotel adds to the atmosphere. Cash preferred.
Bawarchi, RTC X Roads
₹200–₹280/plateBest value for money
Massive portions at unbeatable prices. The special biryani is their signature. Always packed — go at off-peak hours (3pm or after 9:30pm).
Hotel Nizam, Madina Road
₹180–₹250/plateThe locals' secret
No tourist has heard of this place but every Hyderabadi knows it. The pathar ka gosht (stone-grilled meat) is exceptional.

📸
Charminar
Charminar
The 430-year-old icon of Hyderabad. Go at dawn for empty streets and golden light on the minarets. Entry is just 25 rupees.
Golconda Fort at sunrise — the ramparts stretch for 7 kilometres. Come early, bring water, wear good shoes.
❌ Mistakes to Avoid
Visiting Golconda Fort after 11am
Temperatures soar past 35°C on the exposed ramparts. Go at 8am when it opens or attend the Sound & Light Show at 7pm instead.
Buying bangles at the Charminar entrance
The first 200 metres of Laad Bazaar sell machine-made Chinese imports. Walk deeper for genuine lac and glass bangles from generational artisans.
Trying to do Ramoji Film City in half a day
It is 1,666 acres. You need a full day minimum. Don't combine it with Old City sightseeing or you will see neither properly.
Skipping Salar Jung Museum
India's largest one-man collection with 40,000+ artefacts. The musical clock and Veiled Rebecca alone justify the visit. Budget 2 hours minimum.
Eating biryani only at Paradise
Paradise is great but Hyderabad has dozens of legendary spots. Shadab, Bawarchi, Hotel Nizam each offer a different style. Try at least two.
Not bargaining at Begum Bazaar
Pearl sellers quote 3x the real price for tourists. Ask for certificates of authenticity and bargain to 30–40% of the first quoted price.
Hyderabadi dum biryani at a local joint: ₹250. The same dish at a fancy restaurant: ₹800. The local version is usually better.
💡 Pro Tips
Metro Is Your Best Friend
Hyderabad Metro covers Miyapur to LB Nagar via Ameerpet. Clean, fast, air-conditioned. ₹10–₹60 per ride. Beats sitting in traffic every time.
Biryani Timing Matters
Lunch biryani (12–2pm) is freshest. Dinner biryani (7–9pm) at popular spots means waiting 30–45 min. Go at 11:30am or 7pm sharp.
Pearl Buying Guide
Real freshwater pearls feel slightly gritty against your teeth. Plastic feels smooth. Ask for a GIA or local lab certificate. Mangatrai and Krishna Pearls are the trusted names.
Irani Chai Is Non-Negotiable
Nimrah Cafe opposite Charminar has been serving Irani chai + Osmania biscuits since the 1930s. Cost: ₹40–60. Skip this and you have not visited Hyderabad.
Use Ola/Uber, Not Autos
Auto-rickshaws in Old City don't use meters. Ola and Uber are 40–50% cheaper. For short Old City hops, walk — the lanes are too narrow for vehicles anyway.
Best Month by Month
Oct–Nov ✅ perfect weather | Dec–Feb ✅ cool evenings | Mar ⚠️ warming up | Apr–Jun ☔ brutal heat | Jul–Sep 🌧️ monsoon, fewer crowds
