Khajuraho in 2 Days: Temples, Canyon & Safari (Budget to Comfortable, 2026)
UNESCO temples that are 90% not what you think, a volcanic canyon nobody visits, and a national park with wild tigers — all within 2 days.
The erotic sculptures are only about 10% of the carvings — the rest are everyday life, war, and religion. Most tourists photograph the sexy bits and miss the extraordinary artistry of the rest. This guide makes sure you don't.
⚡ Pick Your Plan
Two approaches — same temples, different pace and comfort level.
🛕 The Three Temple Groups
Khajuraho's temples are split into three clusters. Most tourists only visit the Western Group and miss two-thirds of the site.
⭐Western Group (UNESCO)
💡 This is the main event. Kandariya Mahadeva alone has over 800 sculptures. Go at opening or skip the crowds entirely.
🕉Eastern Group (Jain Temples)
💡 The Jain temples here are exquisitely detailed. Parsvanath Temple has some of the finest carving in all of Khajuraho — without the crowds.
🏛Southern Group
💡 Chaturbhuj Temple has a 2.7m standing Vishnu image that most guidebooks barely mention. Almost always empty.

Budget Plan — Under ₹5,000 total
Stay: Guesthouses near Western Group · ₹400–₹800/night · Get around by bicycle ₹100–₹150/day
- ●5:45am: Be at the Western Group gate before 6am opening. The Western Group at 6am opening has maybe 5 people — by 10am there are 200. Set one alarm.
- ●Kandariya Mahadeva Temple first — the tallest, most ornate. 800+ sculptures. Spend 45 min here alone.
- ●Lakshmana Temple — the best-preserved. Look for the entire frieze running along the base showing elephants, horses, and hunting scenes.
- ●Vishwanath Temple and Matangeshwar (the only active temple in the complex) — 45 min for both
- ●9:30am: Breakfast at a dhaba near the temple gate. Poha + chai ₹30–₹50.
- ●11am: Cycle to the Eastern Group (2km). Parsvanath Temple — finest Jain carving in Khajuraho. Ghantai Temple ruins. 1.5 hours, free entry.
- ●1pm: Lunch at Raja Cafe or local dhaba — thali ₹80–₹120
- ●Rest during peak heat (2–4pm) — Khajuraho at midday in season is 30°C+
- ●5pm: Explore the Archaeological Museum (₹10 Indian / ₹100 Foreign) — small but superb collection of sculptures too damaged for display at the temples
- ●7pm: Sound & Light Show at Western Group — ₹250 Indian / ₹700 Foreign. 50 min. The temples lit up at night are a different experience entirely.
- ●7am: Cycle to Southern Group (3km south). Duladeo Temple — the last temple built in the Chandela period. Chaturbhuj Temple — 2.7m standing Vishnu. 45 min total, free.
- ●9am: Hire a shared auto or negotiate a return trip to Raneh Falls (20km, ₹300–₹500 return). Raneh Falls is 20km away and almost nobody goes — a canyon of volcanic rock with a waterfall. It is the hidden gem of Khajuraho.
- ●Entry ₹25 Indian / ₹200 Foreign. The canyon walls are crystalline granite — red, pink and grey layers. 1–1.5 hours.
- ●12pm: Continue to Panna National Park gate (10km from Raneh Falls). If budget allows, a jeep safari costs ₹1,500–₹2,500 per vehicle (split with others). Tigers, leopards, gharials.
- ●Alternatively: skip Panna and return to Khajuraho for the afternoon. Visit the Tribal & Folk Art Museum (free) and walk through the old village.
- ●4pm: Return to town. Final walk around the Western Group exterior walls at golden hour — the sandstone glows. Free from outside.
- ●Evening: Dinner at Mediterraneo or local restaurant ₹150–₹300

Kandariya Mahadeva Temple
Kandariya Mahadeva Temple
The tallest and most ornate of the Western Group. Over 800 sculptures on a single temple — the pinnacle of Chandela architecture.
The Western Group at 6am — five people and silence. By mid-morning the tour buses arrive and you cannot hear yourself think.
❌ Mistakes to Avoid
Arriving after 9am at the Western Group
Tour buses from Orchha and Jhansi arrive between 9–10am. The experience at 6am vs 10am is not the same trip. Wake up.
Only visiting the Western Group
The Eastern and Southern groups are free, almost empty, and have extraordinary sculptures. The Parsvanath Jain Temple rivals anything in the Western Group.
Skipping Raneh Falls
20km away, genuinely spectacular, almost zero tourists. A canyon of volcanic rock that looks like it belongs in Arizona, not Madhya Pradesh. Budget 2 hours.
Visiting April–June
Khajuraho regularly hits 45°C+ in summer. The temples are entirely open-air with no shade. October–March only, ideally November–February.
Not hiring a guide at the Western Group
The sculptures tell interconnected stories that are invisible without context. ₹500–₹800 for a certified guide transforms a photo opportunity into genuine understanding.
Photographing only the erotic panels
The erotic carvings are maybe 10% of the total. The war scenes, celestial musicians, daily life friezes, and geometric patterns are where the real artistry lives.
💡 Pro Tips
The 6am Rule
The Western Group at 6am opening has maybe 5 people — by 10am there are 200. Set one alarm. This single decision determines your entire Khajuraho experience.
Rent a Bicycle
Khajuraho is flat and small. A bicycle (₹100–₹150/day) gets you between all three temple groups, the old village, and local food stalls that no rickshaw driver will take you to.
Raneh Falls — the Real Hidden Gem
Raneh Falls is 20km away and almost nobody goes — a canyon of volcanic rock with a waterfall. It is the hidden gem of Khajuraho. Best after monsoon when the Ken River is full.
Panna Safari Timing
Morning safaris (6am) have the best tiger sighting rates. Book 1–2 days ahead through your hotel or the MP Tourism website. Afternoons are hotter and animals hide.
Sound & Light Show Seats
Arrive 15 minutes early for front-row stone seats. The rear seats have worse acoustics. English show runs at 7:30pm (winter) or 8:30pm (summer). Carry a light jacket — evenings cool down fast.
Combine with Orchha
Orchha is 175km west (4–5hrs by road) and equally spectacular — medieval Bundela palaces with almost no tourists. The Khajuraho + Orchha combination is one of central India's best 4-day trips.
